Students gathered in the gym on Thursday, Jan. 26 for the school’s annual class fair to select their electives and core classes for next year. The event allowed students to meet teachers and look at different subjects before turning in their final registration forms. Many students chose their classes based on future career goals, personal hobbies or a need for a balanced school day.
“I went to Medical Forensics first because I’ve always been into how people solve mysteries using science,” junior Lily Mahlum said. “It’s a mix, I’m taking some classes I know I’ll be good at, but I’m also trying to pick things that look solid on a college application.”
Mahlum also said she does not let her social life dictate her education and looks for classes that offer a change of pace.
“I’d rather take a class I actually like than sit through something boring just because a friend is there,” Mahlum said. “I am taking pottery just to have a break and work with my hands for a bit, but I’m definitely most excited for Medical Forensics. I’m ready to do the labs and see how everything works in person.”
Other students used the fair as a way to test out potential job paths while keeping their grades in mind.
“I headed to Law Enforcement right away because I want to see if this is something I actually want to do as a job later,” junior Gilberto Rodriguez said. “I’m mostly picking things I’m interested in. I figure if I like the subject, I’ll get better grades, which is better for college anyway. I’m mostly doing my own thing this year to make sure I get the classes I want.”
Sophomores also attended the fair, with many focusing on popular electives and social opportunities.
“I ran to Spin Cycling first because I heard the spots fill up fast and I really wanted to get in,” sophomore Kya Bronson said. “My friend and I tried to pick a couple of the same classes so we could help each other out, and I chose Drama just for fun. It seems like a good place to meet people and hang out.”
For students with heavy schedules, the fair was a chance to find ways to reduce stress during the school day.
“I went to Yoga first because I wanted a class that would be relaxing,” sophomore Savannah Fowers said. “My schedule is kind of busy, so I need a break. I’m mostly choosing what I’m good at because I’d rather enjoy my classes and do well in them than be stressed out all the time.”
Most students left the gym with a completed plan, focusing on a balance between hard work and personal wellness.
“In Yoga, I’m looking forward to having a period during the day where I can just stretch and relax,” Fowers said.
