After a rough start to the season, starting with three losses, the boys basketball team has turned it around, beating Fremont on Dec. 9 and Clearfield on Dec. 11. Their record is now 6-6.
The team, led by head coach Landon Cosby, worked well in these games moving the ball around quickly, running a fast offense. In the game against Fremont, despite being down by five points at halftime, the team found a way to turn it around and win by three points in a chippy game. In the game against Clearfield, the standout quarter was the second, where the team outscored Clearfield 26 points to five. This point difference sealed a large lead that was insurmountable. Many students showed up to the game against Fremont on Dec. 9, including student body officer McKenna Cook.
“It was really fun,” Cook said. “There was a lot of energy because it was a close game and it was fun because we were able to win. The team did really [well] and I think it helped that a lot of people showed up. The best moment was at the very end when we won and everyone ran out onto the court.”
Senior Derik Bowden was a key scoring leader in these games with 24 points against Fremont, including two three-pointers, and 15 against Clearfield High which led the team in both of those games. He will be one to watch the rest of the season, as his performance has been outstanding.
Senior Thomas Packer was close behind Bowden in the game against Fremont High with 20 points for himself and a leading 7 rebounds against Clearfield High, proving to be another player to have an eye on. Combined, Packer and Bowden scored more than half of Weber’s 60 points.
Junior Ethan Sayer was a standout player at the game against Clearfield High. He scored 14 points, outshining his previous two points at the Fremont High game. Junior Beau Potokar performed from deep, knocking down two three-pointers in each game, being the lead three-point shooter in these games.
Bowden and Junior Carson Hill were close behind, both hitting three from deep in the two games. Bowden also had ten steals across the two games, proving he is both a defensive and offensive star.
The student body officers hosted a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich tailgate for the quarters and cans fundraiser at the game against Fremont High, and it was a huge success. Grilled cheese sandwiches were sold to help raise money for local families in need.
“It was really fun, we had a lot of people show up, and I feel like we advertised it really well so a lot of people came with their friends,” Cook said. “They would get grilled cheese and then they would go watch the basketball game.”
Key players Hill and Sayer also noted the energy from the fans that showed up and supported the team and the grilled cheese tailgate fundraiser.
“It really helps to have fans show up and cheer for us,” Hill said.
