The Game Awards took place on Dec. 11 at the Los Angeles Peacock Theater, and was hosted by Geoff Keighley and Sydnee Goodman. This is an event where people watch as development studios win awards for the games they’ve made during the year. Many dream of going to these awards to be a competitor and beating some of the greatest.
The awards are usually broken up by new releases, and this year we had a total of 48 new game releases, and the announcement of a Street Fighter Movie releasing sometime in 2026. This year some of the big releases include: Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic, a spiritual successor to the most popular Star Wars game, Knights Of The Old Republic, and Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis, a complete remake of Lara Croft’s original adventure.
During the lead up to the game awards, a statue was found in the desert, and the show’s host Geoff Keighley tweeted out it was teasing something. During the show, viewers found out what the statue was teasing: a new game in the divinity series made by Larian Studios, who are developers of 2023’s Game of the Year, Baldur’s Gate 3.
The Game of the Year category had a lot of heavy hitters nominated this year.. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won Game of the Year, along with nine other awards, breaking the record for most awards won by a single game. It won Game Of The Year, Best RPG, Best Art/Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Performance, Best Music, Best Indie Game, and Best Debut Indie Game. .
“I didn’t watch the game awards this year, but I heard about expedition 33, and how that game came up, showing grit and promise,” junior Braylon Blair said. “They made exactly what they established and published it.”
Best Ongoing Game went to No Man’s Sky, a space exploring survival game that came out in 2016, where players build ships and explore the over 18 Quintillion planets that are all procedurally generated.
“From what I’ve heard, No Man’s Sky [was] a good candidate; when it was released it wasn’t really good.” senior Maya Kruger said. “It was buggy and broken, but the developers refused to give up on it, so they kept fixing it and patching the game.”
Overall The Game Awards had a good turnout this year, tons of new and exciting games were teased, and Expedition 33 broke the record previously held by The Last Of Us 2.
