With the release of Zootopia 2, movie theaters transformed into zoos of their own as families and Disney fans crowded in with blankets and buttery popcorn. The film premiered on Nov. 26, just in time for Thanksgiving, and fittingly explores themes of gratitude, understanding, and working through differences to strengthen relationships.
Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, the movie captures the same light-hearted comedy that made the first film so unforgettable. Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman return as Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, bringing the duo’s chemistry and charm back to life.
The movie takes place shortly after the first movie’s conclusion. Judy and Nick are new partners at the Zootopia Police Department, and despite the fact they work well together, the two of them are having issues with their vastly different personalities. In the last movie, both characters accomplished their dreams. Judy worked hard to become a police officer and got one step closer to making the world a better place, and Nick found a loving friend and abandoned his life of crime. Zootopia 2 shows them navigating the more complicated realities of life. The film balances heavier themes of disagreement, fear, and loss with the lively humor and chaotic fun fans expect.
The plot kicks into gear when Judy and Nick chase a case involving the founder of Zootopia and a mysterious reptile. After being wrongfully framed for a crime they didn’t commit, the duo must flee from the law while trying to uncover the truth. Judy is determined to do what’s right, even at great personal risk. Nick, however, terrified at the thought of losing Judy, struggles with the danger ahead.
Separated on their journey, both characters must confront past traumas and personal fears before they can reunite. Their emotional reunion, where they openly express how much they mean to each other, stands out as one of the most heartfelt moments in the film.
Zootopia 2 is guaranteed to make audiences laugh and tear up. The humor appeals to both kids and adults, and the new characters are endlessly charming. Gary De’Snake (voiced by Ke Huy Quan) and Nibbles Maplestick (voiced by Fortune Feimster) quickly became personal favorites.
The film also features a new song by Shakira titled “Zoo,” which pairs sincere, relatable lyrics with an upbeat, engaging rhythm. Disney Animations truly did an amazing job with this film.
I would recommend Zootopia 2 to any fan of the original. It’s entertaining for children and adults alike and offers a powerful message: growth takes time.
