The third installment of the “Tron” movie franchise, “Tron: Ares”, came out this year on Oct. 10, 15 years after the last movie was released, “Tron: Legacy”. Many science fiction fans were excited leading up to the film’s release, especially with the colorful visuals and impressive CGI found in the movie’s trailer.
In the movie, the characters are facing a problem of the grid leaking into the real world from the military in the real world who is using an AI program. In the previous movies, a great computer engineer Kevin Flynn found out one of his workers is stealing from his company and tries to hack the system, but Flynn is put into the system and then becomes a freedom fighter for the oppressed programs of the grid.
A few things I thought were cool about the movie were the amazing lights and futuristic look in the grid (A digital world created by Kevin Flynn with programs and games). There were also some great songs in the Tron soundtrack, like “Paranoid” by Black Sabbath.
The story didn’t catch my interest and I couldn’t really tell what was going on during the movie. Some of it was a little confusing to understand and I couldn’t tell who was good or who was bad. Due to the fact the movie lacked real emotional vulnerability and character development, I found myself not being able to relate to many of the characters. When I first sat down in the theater, popcorn in hand, I was full of excitement. By the end of the movie, though, I found myself being bored.
At first glance, this move has the perfect cast, featuring famous actors like Jared Leto and Cameron Monaghan. However, whether it be from the decisions made by the directors or the actors, much of the acting was poorly done.
The plot moved too fast for me to understand it as someone who has not seen the other Tron movies before, so I would recommend watching the previous two movies in the franchise before jumping into “Tron: Ares”.
Overall, I thought the actual cinematography and design of the movie was well done, but the actual plot was uninteresting to me. If you have some free time, “Tron: Ares” might be a good movie for you to pass the time. Fans of the “Tron” cinematic universe might be disappointed after the end credits roll, though.
