Waiting seven years for a game sounds absurd, maybe downright insane. But fans of Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight sure did. Subreddits would get their hopes up every time a new game direct was happening. It wasn’t until April 2, 2025 that people got a trailer confirming a 2025 release date. On Sept. 4, the game dropped. “Dropped” isn’t the right word – more like it came crashing in. Silksong’s release managed to crash Nintendo Switch’s E-Shop, Playstation’s store, and Steam.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is a sequel to the Metroidvania game Hollow Knight, where you play as the knight’s half sister Hornet, as Hornet is kidnapped and taken to a strange land known as Pharloom. Unlike the first game where you descended into a ruined kingdom, this time you ascend up a ruined kingdom fighting against this kingdom’s holy citadel.
Hollow Knight: Silksong took everything from Hollow Knight and made it better. It doubled the bosses, enemy counts, areas and this time we get a more engaging story, since unlike the knight from the first game, Hornet can talk to those around her. The game did make a big change from the first, making Hornet’s movements more quick and fluid, allowing for more reactive and fast combat. But with that comes a higher difficulty than the first game, and you start out with five hearts. Most enemies and bosses in this game deal two of your hearts, meaning you can only take three hits in total.
Buying a copy of Silksong will set you back $20 but it’s a really good value for all the hand drawn visuals, backgrounds, animations and the wonderful soundtrack, and hours upon hours of gameplay. The even better part is that a DLC (Downloadable Content) is in the works, and like the first game, it will be tacked on for free.
This game is definitely amazing. I was a huge fan of the first so I was definitely hyped for the sequel. My only gripe is the final boss not feeling like a final boss, because unlike in the first game where The Hollow Knight was the center of the game, this time the boss hardly appeared until the end of the game. Would I still recommend this game? Yes, Yes I would. All I can say is playing the first game is definitely recommended in case you haven’t, as Silksong is a much harder game.
