Sterling Scholar Profile: Milan Peterson

Sterling Scholar Profile: Milan Peterson

From food science and cooking, to interior design and child development, senior Milan Peterson has a deep-rooted passion for family and consumer sciences that stems from her siblings’ same love for it.

Peterson was chosen as the FACS Sterling Scholar this year. Her love for FACS first began with an Interior Design class.

“I thought my Interior Design class would just be another fun class to take,” Peterson said. “But then I took a family class, CHS 2400, and it was a very interesting class about family.”

Peterson realized this pathway was something deeper than just taking some classes for fun, it had her thinking of learning something more past family and consumer sciences. She noticed she cared for family classes and extra-curriculars before becoming a sterling scholar.

“I didn’t really think about families and finances before,” she said. “But I deep dived in and that was what I loved about it.”

Following this pathway has always been something she has seen from her two older sisters who were also involved with family and consumer sciences as well as being Sterling Scholars. Watching them fulfill this path was something that Peterson loved watching as she grew up.

“I wanted to follow in their path,” Peterson said. “It interested me that way too because they were doing it.”

Peterson also loves to bake and enjoys the creativity that comes along with it, knowing you can make whatever and do whatever you think of. She likes to think practically so things like baking, crafting and sewing have been something she has loved to do even outside of school because they are things that are useful and creative.

“[With] baking, I love it and I think you can do so many things with it,.” Peterson said. “I love to craft and it’s very practical in ways like if I needed to sew something I know how to do it.”

Peterson plans on going on a mission right after high school, and once she comes back she would like to attend BYU for further education. She is currently thinking about what she wants to do as a career, but she may consider continuing the family and consumer sciences career pathway.

“My advice for someone who wants to become a Sterling Scholar is put in the work now, so then it’s easier when you actually want to be one,.” Peterson said. “If you want to go into this path of family and consumer science I think it’s great because it’s a practical day-to-day thing.”
