What starts as a story of two friends trying to bring their dreams back to life by filming a DIY, low-budget reboot of their favorite movie, becomes a wildly terrifying jungle nightmare.
In the new “Anaconda” movie, writers turn the horrifying story of a killer, 1,000-foot anaconda into a meta-comedy, with moments of fear and anticipation and other moments of laughter.
With Jack Black as “Doug” and Paul Rudd as “Griff” it’s hard not to laugh. This reboot of Anaconda has audiences laughing out loud in the theatre.
While going through a mid-life crisis, Griff convinces his best friends Doug, Claire and Kenny to go on a three-week trip to the Brazilian Amazon in attempts to reboot their childhood favorite movie “Anaconda”. Things take a turn when the group encounters a real 1,000-foot anaconda. The group has to face the jungle, illegal gold miners, a giant anaconda, and the acceptance that life can get in the way of dreams, and they learn to never lose sight of the thing that is truly important: friendship.
Once I saw that 1,000-foot snake on the screen, I was hooked. The comedical timing was perfect, I was never bored and every twist really twisted my brain. It was scary at times but it was always well-blended with comedy. The visual effects were amazing as well. At times I actually thought the snake was real.
I loved the constant referrals to the original “Anaconda”, and how the movie is ironic in a way. The reboot is about a group of friends who want to make a reboot of the movie. I loved how they used things that happened in the original to move the story along, but also made it different so it wasn’t repetitive.
I thought the very beginning was confusing and wasn’t necessary for the story to move forward. In fact, I think the whole concept of the character “Ana” being their guide but also having secrets of her own was pointless. I thought adding her in dragged the story and just made the film less scary because they focused on her too much. Like Riff said, it was like watching Ana-conda.
The reboot of Anaconda was an amazing tribute to the original and also a perfect original itself. The comedy in the film really was amazing and I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes thrillers and likes to have a good laugh.
