When I think back on it, Something that changed my life was a small game titled “Dungeons and Dragons.” or more commonly known as D&D. As a small child I always had a huge imagination, but I never did much with it. I had always known about D&D because my parents were both addicted to the game, but I had never played it. One time my dad showed me how it was played; he made a small scenario and gave me a dice, telling me to say what I wanted to do and then I would roll for it. Sadly that ended with me blowing up a pirate ship. Oops.
It wasn’t until 2020 that I had my true first D&D experience. We lived close to this game store that was starting to host D&D so I went and made a character that had mild success. The campaign only lasted one session because the following week, the COVID lockdown happened. For months and months I had no contact with most of the outside world except for texts and calls.. But eventually once the lockdown started to ease up and my Nana returned to work, she needed someone to watch me, so my biological dad came over to help. And with him, he brought Pathfinder, which is just basically D&D and we played a campaign. It was the most fun I ever had in a campaign.
My first character I ever technically made was Geldar Goldheart. He was an elf sorcerer. I remember some really fun moments with him where I’d constantly use Mudball and Iceball as my main spells. I also had basically a glitter bomb where I’d explode color everywhere. At first it was just me, my bio-dad and my bio-dad’s wife. At some point my uncle joined in and the campaign got even more fun.
Sadly as Covid faded, so did our sessions.
But his campaigns helped me connect with a dad I never had. It almost felt like for once, I had found my people and found those who were like me.
It was nice to find someone who I could share interests with even if it was the dad I never did have.
Nowadays his campaigns inspired me to write my own stories, and DM my own campaigns.
