SBO leaders and officers spent time from spring to September preparing for homecoming week, which will take place Sept. 22-27.
“We start planning in the spring, and then we plan throughout the summer,” SBO advisor Kaitlyn Kolilis said.
The SBOs came in multiple times throughout the summer just in preparation for homecoming.
“There is so much that people don’t see that goes into everything,” Nathan Tolman said.
They work so hard throughout the year to prepare so all the students can have a good time. It takes time and quality to prepare a good dance, and all the SBOs help make it happen.
The theme is a huge part of homecoming, influencing the decorations and music played at the dance. The SBOs get to decide the theme every year.
“We collectively figured out the theme as SBO’s,” Tolman said.
They decided on “Talking to the Moon” by Bruno Mars for this year’s homecoming. They said they decided on that theme because it was something different and they all thought the students would enjoy it.
Homecoming week is an overall expensive week for the school. In order to cover for homecoming week they use the money put towards tickets to cover the school’s expenses.
“Homecoming is a little pricey of a dance so that everything we do throughout the week is free,” Tolman said.
The SBOs and SBO advisor handle budgeting. They have to get tax exemption which can be a struggle at times and some stores can be difficult to work with.
A big part of how well homecoming goes depends on the DJ. Last year the school tried a new DJ, but the students did not like him because of his chosen music. The crowd has been known to like more mosh pit types of music rather than slow dances.
“If they’re not playing those types of songs, it’s not as enjoyable for a lot of people,” Tolman said.
